Full stop?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In my view, the question deserves a deeper explanation, especially considering the Polish context, where leading by example still tends to fall short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself the following questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How many times has your company made decisions that clearly suggest there are more important matters than implementing another safety programme?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How many times has the decision been made that such a programme simply won\u2019t work?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How often have you heard that \u201csafety is overrated\u201d and that investment in HSE is just money down the drain?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/newhse.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img-19-1024x590.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newhse.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img-19-1024x590.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/newhse.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img-19-550x317.jpg 550w, https:\/\/newhse.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img-19-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newhse.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img-19-768x443.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newhse.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img-19-1536x885.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/newhse.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img-19-18x10.jpg 18w, https:\/\/newhse.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img-19.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is this negative approach to safety at work unacceptable?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because no set of rules, personal protective equipment (PPE), or safety programmes\u2014be it BBS or any other\u2014can ever work if the people running the company are not genuinely interested in safety. Without basic management engagement, money spent on these measures may indeed be considered wasted. It is precisely the involvement of the CEO, directors, and managers that lays the foundation for setting and upholding safety rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Now, imagine you're a new employee. On your first day, a manager introduces you to the company\u2019s policies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of these rules is to always use the handrail when using the stairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An hour later, you see that same manager walking up the stairs without holding the handrail. What\u2019s the first thing that comes to mind?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIf he doesn\u2019t do it, why should I?\u201d<\/strong> The same goes for any other safety rule: <strong>\u201cIf the manager doesn\u2019t care about safety, why should I bother?\u201d<\/strong>This illustrates that supervisors\u2019 behaviour has a greater influence on employee conduct than the policies themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leadership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Managerial commitment to occupational health and safety must be visible and clearly understood by all employees.<\/strong> Directors, managers, and HSE professionals are responsible for developing procedures, ensuring compliance, and implementing and sustaining HSE projects. In other words, they must lead by example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A true safety leader is someone for whom safe habits have become second nature. But leadership goes beyond managing one\u2019s own safety behaviour. <strong>A genuine leader also inspires others to actively reduce risk in the workplace.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manager vs. Leader<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The terms \u201cmanager\u201d and \u201cleader\u201d are often used interchangeably, but there are crucial differences between these roles\u2014differences that are key to achieving strong safety performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I'm referring in particular to managers working within rigid organisational hierarchies. They often believe that exerting formal authority is what defines leadership. What they forget is that leadership is a voluntary act: one person influencing another by modelling the right behaviours to reach shared goals and generate positive change within the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A manager can be a leader\u2014but only through conscious effort and a willingness to cooperate with their team to effectively fulfil both roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What skills and competencies should a good safety leader have?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lead by example: know and follow the company\u2019s safety rules\u2014not just when others are watching, but as a matter of habit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify and respond to unsafe behaviours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report hazards and dangerous practices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain open communication with both colleagues and supervisors about safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implement changes to improve safety and working conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage co-workers to engage in safe behaviours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acknowledge and reinforce positive, safe actions by colleagues and team members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accept constructive criticism of the safety system and take action to improve it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is just a brief summary of the core behaviours expected of a true safety leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my work, I\u2019ve often heard corporate directors say that \u201csafety is overrated and proposed changes won\u2019t work.\u201d<strong>\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But they won\u2019t work only if leadership fails to follow the very rules they\u2019re asking their employees to obey.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Poziom bezpiecze\u0144stwa pracownik\u00f3w w twojej organizacji zale\u017cy od zaanga\u017cowania \u201emanagementu\u201d koniec i kropka?
